Aaqib Javed, Pakistan’s interim head coach and national selector, spoke candidly on Wednesday about the significant impact of injuries to key players Saim Ayub and Fakhar Zaman. Their absence, he acknowledged, was a major factor in the team’s struggles during the ongoing ICC Champions Trophy. Despite this setback, Aaqib reassured fans that the team remains focused and determined to end the tournament on a positive note.

“We are not worried about a lack of motivation,” Aaqib stated. With their semi-final hopes dashed, Pakistan now prepares to face Bangladesh in their final group match in Rawalpindi on Thursday. While the outcome of this match won’t alter their tournament fate, the squad is determined to finish strong.

Team Selection Under Scrutiny

The Pakistan squad has faced its share of criticism, particularly regarding team selection. Aaqib responded by defending the choices made, emphasizing that the selection committee picked the best available players. He pointed out that the current team is largely composed of the same core that secured ODI series victories against Australia, Zimbabwe, and South Africa in the lead-up to the Champions Trophy, with only three changes.

“Certain players who are vital in specific matches were unavailable,” Aaqib explained. “Saim and Fakhar bring a lot of positivity to the team. When they’re not there, we have to make adjustments.” Despite the changes, Aaqib made it clear that the overall team composition was in line with Pakistan’s recent successes.

Handling the Emotional Pressure

Another issue Aaqib addressed was the emotional pressure surrounding Pakistan-India matches. The intensity of these encounters often leads to heightened expectations from fans. Aaqib acknowledged that while supporters feel the sting of defeat, the players themselves experience even greater disappointment. “People often confuse T20 and ODI performances, but Pakistan-India matches come with many variables,” he said.

Aaqib’s Coaching Tenure Ends

Following the Bangladesh match, Aaqib’s temporary role as Pakistan’s head coach will conclude. However, he will continue to serve on the selection committee, pending further decisions by the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB). Aaqib’s brief stint has been marked by challenges, but his leadership and insights have been invaluable to the team during this period.

As Pakistan looks to wrap up its Champions Trophy campaign, the team remains determined to build for the future, learning from both their successes and setbacks.
