Intel Unveils Xeon 6700 and 6500 Series Processors for High-Performance Computing and AI

Intel has launched two new processor series in its Xeon 6 family: the Xeon 6700 and Xeon 6500. These processors promise to offer significant improvements in performance and power efficiency compared to previous generations, making them an ideal choice for complex artificial intelligence (AI) tasks, enterprise applications, and high-performance computing (HPC) solutions.

Powerful Performance for Diverse Workloads

Intel’s latest Xeon processors are designed for data centers, not retail use, and are optimized for demanding workloads. According to Intel, the Xeon 6700 and 6500 series feature dedicated Performance cores (P-cores), which help them handle a wide variety of tasks with ease. The company claims that these processors deliver 1.4 times the performance of the fifth-generation Xeon series, and can tackle AI systems with ease.

Intel also emphasized the Xeon 6700 and 6500 series’ AI capabilities, claiming that they outperform the fifth-generation AMD EPYC processors by up to 1.5 times in AI inference, all while using just two-thirds of the cores. This level of efficiency, combined with improved power performance, is expected to help businesses save on energy costs while boosting overall productivity.

Advanced Specifications and Efficiency

The Xeon 6700 and 6500 series come packed with up to 86 cores and feature a Thermal Design Power (TDP) range from 150 to 300W. They support up to eight channels of DDR5 MRDIMM memory, as well as up to 88 PCIe 5.0 lanes—boasting up to 136 lanes in single-socket configurations. Additionally, they feature 64 lanes of CXL 2.0 to further enhance performance and expand scalability.

The processors are not only efficient in terms of raw power, but also in power consumption. Intel says these chips offer improved performance-per-watt, allowing businesses to consolidate up to five-year-old servers with a 5:1 ratio, effectively saving on power and space.

Introducing Xeon 6 for Network and Edge Solutions

Alongside the Xeon 6700 and 6500 series, Intel also unveiled the Xeon 6 for network and edge applications. These specialized system-on-chip (SoC) processors are built to handle virtualized radio access networks (vRAN), media, AI tasks, and network security. The Xeon 6 for network and edge is tailored to meet the growing demand for AI-driven network and edge solutions.

Intel promises a 70 percent improvement in performance-per-watt with these chips, along with 2.4 times the RAN capacity compared to previous-generation models. Another key feature is the Intel Media Transcode Accelerator, an in-built media accelerator designed to optimize power and improve overall performance.
