Despite the gaming industry shifting toward newer hardware, Call of Duty 2025 may still release on PS4 and Xbox One, according to recent reports. While most triple-A titles have moved away from older consoles, the next installment in Activision’s blockbuster shooter franchise could continue its cross-generation tradition.
Last-Gen Consoles Still in the Mix
The report comes from CharlieIntel, a trusted source for Call of Duty news. In a recent post on X (formerly Twitter), the outlet claimed that Call of Duty 2025 is in development for PS4 and Xbox One.
“Call of Duty 2025 could still release on PS4 and Xbox One, per sources. Supporting last-gen in 2025 is a wild decision, but the game is in development for the old consoles from what we’ve heard,” CharlieIntel wrote.
Activision has yet to confirm these claims, but the decision wouldn’t be surprising. The PS4 remains one of the best-selling consoles of all time, with over 117 million units sold as of August 2024. Despite its age, the console still had 49 million active monthly users last year. Meanwhile, the Xbox One has sold around 58 million units, though Microsoft has not disclosed its current active player count.
Why Keep Supporting Older Consoles?
Keeping Call of Duty available on previous-generation hardware makes sense from a business perspective. With millions of players still using PS4 and Xbox One, releasing the game on these platforms ensures a larger audience and higher sales.
However, there could be trade-offs. Some fans speculate that maintaining last-gen support may limit Warzone’s ability to have two big maps at once, as CharlieIntel suggested in its report.
What to Expect from Call of Duty 2025
Although Activision has not officially revealed Call of Duty 2025, leaks suggest it will be a direct sequel to Black Ops 2. The game will reportedly take place in 2035, continuing the story of David Mason, the protagonist from the 2012 classic.
According to previous leaks, the campaign will focus on espionage and “informational warfare,” promising a fresh take on the Black Ops formula.
A History of Cross-Gen Releases
Call of Duty has consistently released across multiple console generations. The most recent entry, Call of Duty: Black Ops 6, launched in October 2024 on PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series S/X. If the trend continues, Call of Duty 2025 could follow the same path.
