New Delhi: The Delhi Capitals (DC) have appointed Matthew Mott as their assistant coach for the upcoming IPL 2025 season. The franchise made the announcement on Tuesday, bringing the experienced coach into their fold.
Mott Joins DC’s Revamped Coaching Staff
Mott’s arrival adds another layer of expertise to DC’s coaching team, led by Hemang Badani, who became the head coach in October 2024. The team’s coaching staff also includes Venugopal Rao, who will serve as the director of cricket, and Munaf Patel, responsible for bowling duties.
A Track Record of Success
Matthew Mott brings a wealth of experience to the DC setup. Previously, he worked as the assistant coach with Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) during John Buchanan’s leadership in 2008 and 2009. His more recent success came as the head coach of England’s men’s white-ball team. Under his guidance, England claimed the 2022 T20 World Cup. However, Mott left the role in July 2023 following mixed results.
Following his stint with England, Mott was hired as the assistant coach for Sydney Sixers in September 2023, on a three-year contract. His career highlights also include leading the Australian women’s cricket team from 2015 to 2022. Under his leadership, Australia won two T20 World Cups and a 50-over World Cup. The team also remained unbeaten across four Ashes series during his tenure.
Delhi Capitals Looking to Build on Recent Changes
Delhi Capitals have undergone significant changes to their squad ahead of IPL 2025. The team’s best performance came in 2020 when they reached the final, but they finished sixth last season. However, they’ve made several key acquisitions for the upcoming season, including KL Rahul, Harry Brook, Faf du Plessis, and Mitchell Starc, all signed during the November 2024 mega auction.
Notably, DC has retained core players such as Axar Patel, Kuldeep Yadav, Tristan Stubbs, and Abishek Porel. With these roster changes and the arrival of Mott, the franchise is looking to bounce back strongly in IPL 2025.
Uncertainty Over Captaincy
While the team has made exciting additions, DC has yet to announce their captain for IPL 2025. Fans will be eagerly awaiting the decision as the season draws nearer.

Delhi Capitals will begin their IPL 2025 campaign on March 24, where they will face Lucknow Super Giants at the Dr. YS Rajasekhara Reddy ACA-VDCA Cricket Stadium in Visakhapatnam.
