February 25, 2025James Gunn and Peter Safran, co-CEOs of DC Studios, have shared exciting updates about upcoming video games based on the DC Universe. They’ve been in discussions with well-known game studios like Rocksteady and NetherRealm to align new DC titles with the larger plans for the DC Universe films and multimedia franchise. However, fans eager for new releases will have to wait, as Gunn confirmed that the first DCU game is still a “couple of years” away.

Close Collaboration Between DC Studios and Game Developers

Gunn and Safran have made it clear that they’re working closely with game studio heads to ensure the video game adaptations match the direction of the DCU films. At a recent DC Studios event, Peter Safran emphasized the importance of collaboration between DC Studios and the Warner Bros. Global Streaming and Games division, led by JB Perrette.

“We work incredibly closely with JB Perrette, who runs that division, and it’s really the first time it’s ever been this way at Warner Brothers,” Safran said. He went on to describe the direct involvement of Gunn and himself in the process, noting how they regularly meet with Rocksteady and NetherRealm to discuss the characters and storylines they want to explore in the upcoming DC games.

Early Designs and Story Integration

Gunn shared that he and Safran have already seen some early-stage designs for various projects. They are deeply involved in shaping the direction of the games, particularly in terms of storylines and character development. “When they talk about what the story might be, we say, ‘Maybe you want to go this way because we’re planning something with this character,'” Gunn explained.

This approach shows a deeper integration between DC Studios’ film and gaming branches, ensuring that the video games will be closely tied to the broader DC Universe in films and TV shows.

A Long Wait for DCU Gamers

Despite the promising updates, Gunn made it clear that fans should not expect to play these games anytime soon. He confirmed that the first video game tied to the new DC Universe is at least two years away from release. Safran also hinted that some of the upcoming projects were “really interesting,” though no specifics were revealed.

What’s in Development?

The announcement comes after reports that Rocksteady Studios, known for the iconic Batman: Arkham series, is working on a new single-player Batman game. While details are scarce, it is unclear whether this game will be a continuation of the Arkham series or a reboot set in the new DC Universe.

Additionally, a new Wonder Woman game, reportedly under development at Monolith Productions, is also in the works. Though it has been in development for several years, it underwent a reboot in 2024, and like the Batman game, its release is still a few years away.

What Does This Mean for DC Fans?

With the DC Universe expanding into multiple media, fans are likely to see an exciting synergy between films, TV shows, and video games. However, the wait for these projects to materialize will test the patience of many. Still, the close collaboration between Gunn, Safran, and the game developers suggests a future where DC fans can experience their favorite characters in new, immersive ways.

As the DCU continues to grow, fans can look forward to a wave of content across various platforms—but for now, they’ll have to wait for the full-scale launch of these highly anticipated video games.
