Disappointment Surrounds Early Exit After Major Tournament Hosting
Pakistan’s early exit from the ICC Champions Trophy has triggered disappointment and criticism from former cricketers. Despite hosting its first major cricket tournament in nearly three decades, the team’s performance has left many questioning the state of Pakistan cricket.
A Disastrous Campaign
Pakistan’s journey in the tournament began with a 60-run defeat to New Zealand in Karachi. Their hopes of bouncing back were dashed by a six-wicket loss to arch-rivals India in Dubai. With no chance of qualifying after Bangladesh’s loss to New Zealand, Pakistan’s final group match against Bangladesh in Rawalpindi became meaningless.
Wasim Akram Calls for Major Changes
Former captain and cricket legend Wasim Akram was particularly outspoken, criticizing the lack of improvement in Pakistan’s cricket. “We have been backing these players for the last few years, but they are not learning nor improving,” Akram said. “It is time for a major shake-up. We need to improve our system of domestic cricket to produce quality cricketers, not ordinary ones.”
Akram’s comments reflect concerns that the quality of domestic cricket and subpar pitch conditions are contributing to Pakistan’s international struggles. The administrative instability in Pakistan cricket, including politically influenced appointments, has further exacerbated the situation.
Rashid Latif Echoes the Sentiment
Former captain Rashid Latif also voiced his discontent, expressing deep frustration with the state of affairs in Pakistan cricket. “I feel very despondent with the state of Pakistan cricket,” Latif shared. “We need to follow merit and bring in professionals in the administration of the game, not people appointed on a political basis. Frequent changes in the Pakistan Cricket Board, selection committee, and captains have failed us in forming a proper setup and team.”
Latif’s thoughts mirror Akram’s, highlighting the ongoing problems within the sport’s management structure in Pakistan.
A Disappointing Coincidence
The early exit is especially disheartening as it coincides with Pakistan’s first major cricket tournament hosting in almost 30 years. The country had invested heavily in security measures to ensure a successful event, only for the team’s performance to fall short. This result follows a string of disappointing exits, including from the 2023 ODI World Cup in India and the T20 World Cup in the United States and West Indies.
Decline Across Formats
The poor performance isn’t confined to the ICC Champions Trophy. Pakistan’s Test cricket form has also been underwhelming, as the team finished last in the World Test Championship after a drawn series against the West Indies in February. This marks another disappointing chapter for a cricket nation once renowned for its formidable international presence.
What’s Next for Pakistan Cricket?
With the latest setback, Pakistan’s cricketing future seems uncertain. As former cricketers demand sweeping changes, many believe a complete overhaul is necessary. Only time will tell if these calls for reform will be heeded, or if Pakistan will continue to struggle on the world stage.
