Recent research has uncovered new insights into the mysterious practice of using severed skulls in Iron Age Spain. The study, which analyzed prehistoric skulls with iron nails driven through them, reveals that these skulls had diverse purposes—some were used to honor ancestors, while others served as tools of intimidation. Findings from isotope analysis suggest that some of the individuals were locals, while others came from distant regions, providing fresh perspectives on the ritual’s complexity.

Origins of the Severed Skulls

The study, published in the Journal of Archaeological Science: Reports, examined seven skulls from two archaeological sites located on Spain’s southeastern Iberian Peninsula. Using strontium isotope analysis, the researchers were able to pinpoint the geographic origins of these individuals. Strontium levels, which are absorbed during a person’s growth, can reveal details about where a person lived during their early years.

Ruben de la Fuente-Seoane, an archaeologist at the Autonomous University of Barcelona and lead author of the study, explained that the results varied across the sites. At Puig Castellar, three out of four skulls originated from outside the local area, while at Ullastret, only one of three skulls came from a different region. This discrepancy suggests that the practice of using severed heads may have had different meanings at different locations.

Placement of Skulls Reveals Their Purpose

The location where the skulls were found also sheds light on their intended function. At Puig Castellar, the nonlocal skulls were placed near outer walls, indicating they were likely displayed to assert dominance or serve as a warning to outsiders. Meanwhile, at Ullastret, the local skulls were discovered inside homes, implying they were used to honor important figures within the community.

This pattern aligns with historical records from Greek and Roman sources, which mention similar customs among the Gauls and Iberian mercenaries. These groups were known to display severed heads as symbols of power and prestige. While the study uncovers distinct uses for these skulls, the researchers stress that more analysis is needed to fully grasp the ritual’s complexities.
