Former Indian cricketer Wasim Jaffer believes that Virat Kohli still has three to four more years of cricket left in him, and is on the path to breaking Sachin Tendulkar’s legendary record of 100 international centuries. Kohli, who has already amassed 82 centuries across formats, recently added another to his tally during India’s commanding six-wicket win over Pakistan in the Champions Trophy in Dubai.
Speaking to the media on Wednesday, Jaffer shared his thoughts on Kohli’s remarkable consistency and form. “As a cricket fan, you want to see Virat play as much as possible. When he’s in form, nobody wants him to get out. Everyone is happy when he scores, and I’m sure we all want him to play for 3-4 more years and break all records,” Jaffer said.
The 36-year-old has been in exceptional form since 2010, and Jaffer pointed out that Kohli’s ability to surpass Tendulkar’s 100-centuries mark seems increasingly likely. “When Tendulkar made 100 centuries, it seemed unbreakable, but the way Virat has been making runs, it looks like he will break that record. If he does, Tendulkar will be very happy for him,” he added.
Shubman Gill: A Rising Star
While Jaffer had high praise for Shubman Gill, he emphasized that comparing the young opener to Kohli at this stage would be unfair. Gill, who has been in excellent form, recently bagged the man-of-the-series award during India’s series against England and has started strong in the Champions Trophy.
“It would be unfair to judge Shubman based on Virat Kohli’s success. Shubman is creating his own path, and he is playing some brilliant cricket. His performances, especially in England, have been outstanding, and I hope he continues to grow. With players like him and Yashasvi Jaiswal, India’s batting future looks bright,” Jaffer said.
Herschelle Gibbs Shares Kohli’s Future Outlook
Echoing Jaffer’s sentiments, former South African cricketer Herschelle Gibbs also believes that Kohli has a lot of cricket left in him. Gibbs praised Kohli’s fitness and hunger for runs, which he believes will keep the Indian star playing for at least another four years.
“Kohli’s fitness and hunger are remarkable. Just like AB de Villiers, he could play for a few more years. AB retired a bit early, but Kohli’s desire for runs is unbelievable. The way he handles pressure, especially in ODI chases, is phenomenal,” said Gibbs.
India’s Strong Position in the Champions Trophy
Both Jaffer and Gibbs also discussed India’s prospects in the ongoing Champions Trophy. According to Gibbs, India are the favorites to win the tournament. “India looks very strong. They are obviously the favorites. But South Africa is in good form, and if they can overcome their history of underperformance in big tournaments, they could challenge India in the final.”
Looking Ahead
As Kohli continues to make waves on the international cricket scene, fans and experts alike are eagerly watching his journey toward surpassing Tendulkar’s record. Meanwhile, the younger generation, led by players like Shubman Gill, is expected to carry the baton forward for Indian cricket.
